The
Comedy of Errors
This Shakespeare comedy centers around
two sets of identical twins (masters and their slaves) who are separated
as babies and then, as adults, are reunited through a series of
comic mistaken identities. It's a favorite of audiences because
it's fun to watch and easy-to-follow.
This show is one of my favorite theatre
experiences for several reasons. The main reason is that I was fortunate
enough to be cast as one of the dimwitted slaves (Dromio of
Syracuse). I had an absolute ball with this very physical and
comedic role. Director JJ Mayes, gave me lots of freedom to find
and explore new comic bits throughout the rehearsal process. As
an actor, it was a very fulfilling experience.
I was also fortunate enough to become
good friends with members of the cast and crew, which just made
the stage work all the easier and enjoyable.
The show was part of the Santa Clarita
Repertory Theatre's 'Shakespeare in the Park' program. The show
was performed in different parks just north of Los Angeles and the
sets had to be assembled (2-3 hours) and removed (1-2 hours) each
Saturday by the actors and crew. It was a lot of work but being
able to perform the play for appreciative audiences made it all
worthwhile.
